Art and Walking

Yesterday (Sunday) it rained and was coolish. We headed out to the Maison Europenne de la Photographie, a few blocks away, and saw four very interesting exhibits.  The highlights were some incredible Vietnam photos by Henri Huet, who was shot down in a helicopter in Laos in 1971, after 20 years working in Vietnam.  He was born in Vietnman- French father and Vietnamese mother- but went to school in France and then worked at UPI and AP for both the French and Americans.  His photos are amazing.  One very famous photo was on the cover of Life in 1965 and then again on Time magazine in 1995.  It shows a medic who was badly wounded himself, taking care of another soldier.

We also saw collages done by Jacques Prevert (1990-1977).   He worked with the best photographers of his era, including Brassai, Doisneau and Izis using their photos as backdrops for his collages.

Photos by Herve Guibert, who died of AIDS in 1991, were very beautiful.  Finally stark black and white photos of artists and writers including Michel Foucault, one of Guibert's lovers, were done by Marc Trivier, a Belgium photographer.  Luckily, we got to the museum early, as there was a lineup snaking out into the rain when we left.  Went back to the apartment for prawns for dinner.

Monday April 4, Allan went for his first run.  He left early and crossed the river to the Left Bank.  He did 7.5 km and had a great time.  We then went to the Canadian Embassy to find out how we can vote.  The Embassy was closed from 12:00-2:00 p.m..  We did get the forms we have to fill in, but only a security guard was there and he was none too friendly.  The picture of Minister Cannon in the corner was none too reassuring.  We then walked back through the Tuileries Gardens stopping so that Allan could pick up a European adapter from the Apple Store under the pyramid at the Louvre. Walked back to the apartment and then the sun came out so went for another walk.  Light meal at home tonight.
